Steve Schapiro (*1934 in Brooklyn) has not only taken portraits of prominent politicians such as Robert Kennedy, but of public figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as stars like Johnny Depp, David Bowie, Jodie Foster, and Robert de Niro. His pictures subtly reflect the social upheavals of the 1960s and ‘70s. The master photographer also has an eye for the quiet, hidden signs of the times. His camera focuses on scenes and people from everyday, ordinary life—dancers in a theater, for instance, who, in their anonymity, achieve iconographic status while representing a certain milieu and the magic of New York nightlife.

With this cryptic work of art, we are very pleased to be able to offer a particularly unusual Collector’s Edition. This fine art premium print, printed on 808-gram-Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, will be released with the second edition of UPON PAPER, a new image-and-text medium with the character of an object and printed in the quality of an art book on unusually large size (49 x 69 cm) paper by Hahnemühle Fine Art, the oldest paper manufacturer in Germany. UPON PAPER is regarded as a kind of stage for artists and creative people from around the world; it is published twice annually and is available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland through PSG Premium Sales Germany in Hamburg. Hatje Cantz is publishing a limited Collector’s Edition for each of these publications, encased in a cloth-bound protective case and available in conjunction with UPON PAPER, exclusively through Hatje Cantz.
