With her photography project about The Table of Power, the Dutch visual artist Jacqueline Hassink has already drawn a great deal of attention. Martin Parr included her work in his index of the most important photography books of the twentieth century. Her series on the Buddhist complex in Kyoto was also received very favorably on the scene, winning the silver medal in the 2015 German Photography Book competition. Over the period of a decade, between 2004 and 2014, Hassink traveled eight times to the Japanese imperial city, and received permission to record images of these sacred sites, which normally can only be seen by Japanese faithful. She has produced intoxicatingly beautiful photographs of the temples and surrounding gardens, featuring interiors and exteriors, as well as the interplay of the two.
For the Edition Hatje Cantz series, Hassink selected a photographed from 2011 of the famous moss gardens around the temple of Saihô-ji. We are able to offer it as an age-resistant pigment print: a peaceful, meditative photograph that impressively captures the beauty, perfect harmony, and spirit of the place.
