Claudia Fährenkemper
Photomicrographs

Claudia Fährenkemper was born in Castrop-Rauxel in 1959. She lives and works in Lünen and Bonn.

1979–1986: studied art and geography at the Universität Düsseldorf. 1987–1989: studied photography at the Fachhochschule Köln under Arno Jansen. 1989–1995: further studies in photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Bernd Becher and Nan Hoover; master student of Nan Hoover. 1993–1996: adjunct instructor of photography at the Universität-GH Siegen.

Claudia Fährenkemper’s photographs present images from the micro-world, objects that cannot be seen by the human eye without the aid of a microscope. Beetles’ heads, frog larvae, plant seeds and crystals – forms emerging from a deep-black background are transformed before our eyes into landscapes, abstract structures, and strange organic configurations. Yet what makes these images realized with such perfect formal and technical skill so impressive is Fährenkemper’s grasp of the architectural qualities of her models: the armored body of a beetle resembles a warrior’s armor and evokes a striking sculptural effect.

For our Collector’s Edition the artist has selected a work from Habitus, her most recent series featuring photomicrographs of crystals.

Collector's Editions will be shipped upon receipt of payment (including postage and handling) or credit card authorization.
