Bae, Bien-U (*1950) is considered one of Korea ’s most important photo artists. He became known in his native country through meditative landscape photographs which have a calligraphic quality as it were. His most popular works to date are photographs of the famous pine forests in the vicinity of the shrine of the kings of the Silla dynasty at Gyeongju. The artist approaches the spirit of the places and landscapes with a contemplative, Korean-influenced visual vocabulary that also fascinates eyes schooled by western aesthetics.
Pine trees have a very special symbolic importance in Korean culture: “For the Korean people, pines are foundations for their soul,” the photographer said, who chose a fascinating, almost calligraphic motif entitled Sonamu from this famous series for the Collector’s Edition.
