To produce his work, Julius von Bismarck goes to the front where natural forces operate. Whether he’s re-routing lightning with rockets or capturing Hurricane Irma in slow motion, his pictures are always disturbingly, eerily beautiful. However, he is not interested in a documentary or romanticizing view of nature, but in how images of nature are constructed and how they alter our perception of nature, especially in an age of human-induced climate change.
For his latest work von Bismarck filmed wildfires in California, Sweden, and even Brandenburg. He put together a camouflage pattern out of these photographs, which is printed on the T-shirts in our edition. Beautiful, but unfortunately “red hot.”

Julius von Bismarck begibt sich für seine Arbeiten an die vorderste Front von Naturgewalten – ob er mit Raketen Blitze umleitet oder Hurrikan Irma in extremer Zeitlupe abfilmt, immer entstehen Bilder von verstörend-unheimlicher Schönheit. Dabei geht es ihm nicht um einen dokumentarischen oder einen romantisierenden Blick auf die Natur – ihn interessiert die Konstruktion von Naturdarstellungen, und wie sich unsere Wahrnehmung von Natur verändert, gerade jetzt im Zeitalter des vom Menschen verursachten Klimawandels.
Für die neuesten Arbeiten filmte von Bismarck in Waldbrandgebieten von Kalifornien, Schweden und auch Brandenburg. Aus diesen Aufnahmen setzte er digital ein Camouflage-Muster zusammen, mit dem die T-Shirts unserer Edition Hatje Cantz bedruckt wurden. Wunderschön, und leider »brandaktuell«.
JULIUS VON BISMARCK (*1983) wuchs in Riad (Saudi-Arabien) und Freiburg auf und studierte an der Universität der Künste Berlin und am Hunter College New York Visuelle Kommunikation. 2013 absolvierte er die Meisterklasse von Ólafur Elíasson.
