Sanna Kannisto plans the setting and lighting of her photographs as carefully as possible in advance. In a way, she sets up the stage for her models. She has a collection of branches from which she chooses the most suitable for each species. The lab stands holding the branches are also an essential part of the composition. The animals acting as models sometimes behave in an unpredictable manner in these settings, but the surroundings are the result of careful consideration and detailing.
A cubicle with glowing white light, deep in a forest or on some distant cliff site, is the photographic studio of Sanna Kannisto. This portable studio is constructed of light-reflecting and translucent, opaque acrylic panels and is easy and quick to assemble. A large number of her work has been photographed in this little field studio and she has found this method to be best suited for her working methods.
In Sanna Kannisto’s photographs, the minute details of the animals are etched against the white background with a precision that reflects these scientific imaging traditions. At the same time, however, Kannisto creates her own individual expression, which deviates from natural science. Alongside the scientists’ work, she creates a stage that also connects with artistic traditions: still lifes and staged photographs. We are very pleased to publish two of her works—Great Tit on a Katsura Branch, 2020 and Aegithalos caudatus, 2019.

Ein »Kasten« mit blendend weißem Licht, mitten im Wald oder an einem Felsvorsprung aufgestellt, stellt das Fotostudio von Sanna Kannisto dar. Dieses tragbare Studio aus lichtreflektierenden und lichtdurchlässigen Milchglas-Acrylplatten lässt sich leicht und schnell aufbauen. Eine große Anzahl ihrer Arbeiten wurde in diesem kleinen »Feldstudio« fotografiert, da diese Arbeitsmethoden sich für die Fotografin als die am besten geeignete entpuppt hat.
Sanna Kannisto plant dabei das Setting und die Beleuchtung ihrer Fotografien so sorgfältig wie möglich im Voraus. In gewisser Weise bereitet sie die Bühne für ihre Modelle vor. Sie hat eine Sammlung an Zweigen, aus der sie für jede Vogelart die passendste auswählt. Die Tiere, die hier als Modelle fungieren, verhalten sich in diesen Umgebungen dabei aber auch manchmal auf unvorhersehbare Weise.
In Sanna Kannistos Fotografien werden die winzigen Details der Tiere vor weißen Hintergrund in einer solchen Präzision abgebildet, die an naturwissenschaftliche Bildtraditionen erinnert. Gleichzeitig schafft die Fotografin aber auch ihren eigenen individuellen Ausdruck, der von der Naturwissenschaft abweicht. Neben Forschertätigkeit gelingt es ihr, eine Bühne zu bauen, die auch an ikonografische Traditionen anknüpft als Stillleben und inszenierte Fotografien. Wir freuen uns sehr, gleich zwei ihrer Arbeiten – Great Tit on a Katsura Branch, 2020 und Aegithalos caudatus, 2019 – in der Edition Hatje Cantz verlegen zu dürfen.
SANNA KANNISTO (*1974, Hämeenlinna, Finnland) studierte Fotografie an der Turku School of Art and Communication und an der University of Art and Design in Helsinki. Sie ist in zahlreichen Ausstellungen und renommierten Sammlungen vertreten. 2017 gewann sie den William Thuring Prize der Finnish Art Society.
