Das Foto unserer Edition Hatje Cantz ist das ungewöhnliche und berührende Portrait einer männlichen Person of Color, bis zu den Schultern im Ozean stehend, den Blick skeptisch in die Ferne und aus dem Bild heraus gerichtet. Es thematisiert nicht allein – die im Buch dargestellte – gesellschaftspolitische Lage der USA vor dem Hintergrund von strukturellem Rassismus und Machtmissbrauch, sondern steht darüber hinaus für die global herrschenden Machtstrukturen, Krisen und Migrationsproblematiken unserer Zeit.
Die Edition Hatje Cantz ist im Zusammenhang mit Kris Graves’ neuem Projekt Privileged Mediocrity entstanden – das (foto-)dokumentarische Zeugnis der US-Amerikanischen Gesellschaft in Portraits, Landschaftsaufnahmen und urbanen Situationen, und in welchem Maße systematische Ungerechtigkeit, Rassismus und Ungleichheit die aktuelle Gesellschaft und ihr Geschichtsverständnis prägen.
This Edition Hatje Cantz is an unusual and touching photo portrait of a male person of colour, standing up to his shoulders in the ocean, looking sceptically into the distance and out of the picture. It not only addresses - the socio-political situation in the USA depicted in the book - against the background of structural racism and abuse of power, but also stands for the globally prevailing power structures, crises and migration problems of our time.
This edition was produced in connection with Kris Graves' new project Privileged Mediocrity the (photo-)documentary testimony of US-American society in portraits, landscape photographs and urban situations, and to what extent systematic injustice, racism and inequality shape current society and its understanding of history.
KRIS GRAVES (*1982, New York) ist Fotograf und Verleger. Mit einer Mischung aus konzeptioneller und dokumentarischer Fotografie, offenbart er die Infrastruktur von Macht. Seine Arbeiten wurden weltweit veröffentlicht und ausgestellt, u. a. im MoMA, New York, im Getty Institute, L. A., und in der National Portrait Gallery in London. Graves lebt in New York und Kalifornien.
KRIS GRAVES (*1982, New York) is a photographer and publisher based in New York and California. Using a mix of conceptual and documentary practices, he photographs the impact of systemic unfairness on the built environment. Graves received his BFA in Visual Arts from S.U.N.Y. Purchase College and has been published and exhibited globally, including MoMA, New York; Getty Institute, L. A.; and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
